Precision Marshall's 304L is a T-300 series austenitic stainless steel, which has a minimum of 18% chromium

and 8% nickel. It is the standardly known as "18/8 stainless". 304 L has a wide variety of general-purpose

Applications

Hot Forming

Heat evenly to 2100/2300°F for the majority of hot working processes. Do not forge below 1700°F. Material should be annealed at 1900°F minimum and quenched in water for maximum corrosion resistance or rapidly cooled by air.

Cold Forming

Cold working operations will increase the strength & hardness and allows material to be drawn without

immediate annealing.

Welding

304L has excellent welding properties and post weld annealing is not required.

Machinability

304L is subject to work hardening and chip breaking (the use of chip breakers is advised). The best machining

results are achieved with slower speeds, heavier feeds, sharp tooling, excellent lubrication and rigid setup and

machine.

This TRM-2 Ground and Polished Drill Rod is made by Precision Marshall Steel Company. The steel type is AISI M-2 high-speed tool steel, annealed for easier machining. It has uniform machining properties and consistent response to heat treatment through carefully controlled chemical analysis.

TRM-2 is a tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steel. It has a wider heat treat range than most of the high-speed steels, and has a resistance to decarburization. It offers an excellent combination of good red hardness, toughness and wear resistance.

Identification of each production lot is maintained, and a certified chemical analysis can be provided upon your request.

The drill rod ends are saw-cut and chamfered or deburred when the diameter is 3/8" or greater. This processing protects other rods from scratching, helps your set-ups and improves safety in handling. HEAT TREATMENT: Warm slightly before charging into furnace, which should be operating at 1350-1500°F. After thorough preheating, transfer to hardening furnace at 2175-2225°F, depending on the tool size and degree of hardening required for application. Cool in air, oil or a molten salt bath operating at 1000-1100°F. In case of oil quenching, it is usually good practice to interrupt the quench by removing the tool after it has reached about 1000°F, and allow the cooling to continue in still air. Tools should be allowed to cool to 150°F or when they can be held by the bare hand, then TEMPERED IMMEDIATELY. The tempering temperature may be varied according to the desired hardness, but it is usually in the range of 1000-1100°F. Double tempering is ALWAYS RECOMMENDED.
