The steel type is AISI S-7 shock-resistant tool steel, annealed for easier machining.Super-7 is suitable for use in applications requiring high impact strength such as shears, punches, blanking dies and chisels. Its superior soundness makes it suitable for high-hardness plastic molds and zinc die casting dies. The standard nominal sizes are ground to a satin finish on four sides, free of decarburization, held to tight tolerances in dimensions and squareness, and ready for layout. Each piece is lightly coated with rust-preventive oil and individually packaged in a vapor-resistant envelope which has the size and steel type clearly marked. At least one end is painted black for easier identification of the steel type. The oversize Thickness |T| tolerance is +.010/+.015". The oversize Width |W| tolerance is +.010/+.015". The 18" Length |L| tolerance is +.125/.250". The 36" Length |L| is tolerance +.250/.500".The available thicknesses are 1/8 to 1/2 inches. The available widths are 1/2 to 6 inches. After preheating 1200/1250°F, soak material for one half hour per inch of thickness. When material reaches this temperature, heat to 1725°F, then soak material for one half hour per inch of thickness when material is up to this temperature. Air cool or oil quench to hand warm (approximately 150°F) and temper immediately. Note: Sections over two inches thick should be interrupt oil quenched or full oil quenched to attain full hardness.TEMPERING DATA: Double temper one hour per inch of section thickness to desired hardness at a heating rate of two hours per inch. Cool in air to room temperature between the two tempers. Representative hardness levels after tempering are tabulated below. Oil quenched from 1725°F. Tempered 4 Hours.
