The steel type is AISI W-1 tool steel, annealed for easier machining. It is a fine-grained electric furnace-melted commercial grade tool steel which is supplied in the fully-spheroidized 100% decarb-free condition.Watercrat is the least expensive grade of flat stock. The through-hardening characteristic has optimum response to heat treatment and provides toughness and excellent wear-resistance in service. Its high carbon content allows it to be used often without heat treatment for many applications. The standard nominal sizes have a smooth drawn finish on four sides, free of decarburization, held to tight tolerances in dimensions and squareness, and ready for layout. Each piece is lightly coated with rust-preventive oil and individually packaged in a vapor-resistant envelope which has the size and steel type clearly marked. At least one end is painted red for easier identification of the steel type. The Thickness |T| and Width |W| tolerance is ±.0005" for dimensions of .249" or less, ±.0010" for .250-.499", and ±.0015" for .500 and up. The Length |L| tolerance is +.125/-.000". This flat stock is also referred to as drill rod because it is manufactured by cold-drawing instead of by precision grinding. The available thicknesses are 1/16 to 1 inches. The available widths are 1/16 to 1 inches.
