 4142 Ground Flat Stock is pre-hardened to about 26-34 Rc (261-321 Brinell). Its machinability is about 85% compared to 1% carbon steel. It can be flame hardened to increase its toughness and wear resistance. Standard lengths are 18", 36", and 72".
